October 2006 Beaded Gift Box Project

You can find a variety of Free Arts and Craft Project here, including beaded project and other project. This month's project is a beaded gift box made with Japanese seed beads using the Right Angle Weave technique (RAW).

The pictorials are illustrated with spaces between beads for a clearer direction, in the actual beading, there should be no spaces.

Beaded Gift Box :

What you need:

1)    Glass seed beads size 11/0 (two different color)
2)    Beading string (25mm)
4)    Beading Wire (25 gauge)

Step 1: Always Remember to pull tight on EVERY STEP.
  • Cut a piece of string around a meter long.

Add 4 green seed beads at the middle of this string and crisscross the both ends through the last added bead. (remember to balance out both ends of the string so that they are of the same length)

    Follow by:
Add one green bead on each strings and one red bead to crisscross.
Add one red bead on each strings and one red bead to crisscross.
Add one green bead on each strings and one green bead to crisscross.
Add three green beads on the bottom string and crisscross the other line through the last added bead (this prepares you for the next row on top).

    Next row:
Add three green beads on the right string and crisscross the other line through the last added bead. You have to pass the string pointing to the first row (black) through the one green bead from the 4th square's top bead (shown where the black arrow is coming out from).

If you have not done this stitch RAW before, please start on a simpler RAW project before attempting this one. E.G. Beaded Crystal Ring

Step 2:
  • Now repeat step 1 until you get 19 rows of squares.

This step shows the joining of the top and bottom ends of the 19 rows of squares you finished (which also makes the 20th row - you will be forming 4 sides of the cube / box and each side of the cube / box should have 5 rows of squares)

When you are finished with the 19th row, make sure you strings are coming out on the top last bead (pointing up)

Add one green bead on the outer string (blue), pass this string through the mirror bead on the bottom of your piece (joining the top with bottom), add one more green bead and crisscross both strings through this bead.

Pass the top string (blue) through the adjoining bead from the top of the piece.
Pass the bottom string (black) through the adjoining bead from the bottom of the piece.
Add one red bead to crisscross both lines through.

Repeat the passing through with the top string through the top red bead and the bottom string through the bottom red bead, add one red bead to crisscross.

Repeat the line passing process again, add one green bead to crisscross.
Repeat the line passing process again, add one green bead crisscross, after completing this last bead, pass the top string through the top bead (shown where the blue line comes out of), this is to prepare for the next step.

Step 3:
  • Now for the side of the cube, turn the piece with the hollow side (also where the strings are coming out from) facing up towards you.

The purple green beads on the sides represents the finished piece from step 2. While the green color beads represents new beads to be added in this step.

Add two green beads on the bottom black line, cross the other line through the last added bead. Follow by passing the previous black line (where you used to add beads on) through the top 2nd bead from the frame you made in step 2.

Add two green beads on the bottom blue line, cross the other line through the last added bead. Follow by passing the previous blue line up though the 3rd bead from the top bead frame from step 2.

Add two green beads on the bottom black line, cross the other line through the last added bead. Follow by passing the previous black line up though the 4th bead from the top bead frame from step 2.

Add two green beads on the bottom blue line, cross the other line through the last added bead. Follow by passing the previous blue line up though the 5th bead from the top bead frame and the first bead from the right bead from both from step 2.

Pass the bottom black line through the last bottom bead from the bottom bead frame from step 2.

Tie off and string the excess back through the piece, no specific order, just to strengthen the knot and piece.

String on 15 red seed beads, add on one last bead on both end of the wire in the same direction at the same time. Make sure one end of the wire is around 2 inches longer than the other.
Step 9:
  • Take the longer side of the wire, add on 15 red seed beads, pass the wire back through the last bead added in step 8, pull tight and add on 8 red seed beads, loop back through the second last bead added and all the way back up to the center of the bow.
Take the shorter side of the wire, add on 8 red seed beads, loop back through the second last bead added and all the way back up to the center of the bow where you meet with the other wire.
  • Crisscross both wire in opposite direction through one seed bead in the center of your beaded box (where the red strip are - shown in the diagram in blue). tie off the wire and you can hide the excess wire by passing it back through your beaded box piece, no specific order.
